Denmark Vesey, once enslaved, purchased his freedom and became a carpenter and church leader in Charleston, South Carolina. But he knew freedom was not real as long as others remained enslaved.
In 1822, Vesey helped plan one of the largest slave revolts in American history. The plan was discovered before it could unfold, and Vesey was executed along with dozens of others.
His courage lives on. Vesey’s vision for freedom challenged the system of slavery and inspired generations to continue the fight.
Why it matters: Vesey reminds us that resistance, even in the face of death, shapes the path to justice.
